Historical Events of George Washington

“Observe good faith and justice toward all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all.” George Washington, Father of Our Country, was a very gifted man and leader. Although he is known for his military abilities especially in his early career, he was truly a peaceful man. George Washington fought for the British in the French and Indian War and was able to defeat the French. Later, as General of the Continental Army, George Washington was finally able to defeat the British bringing an end to the Revolutionary War. Even though he had great success as a military leader, he preferred to live life peacefully as a civilian and to serve his country by being involved.

By 1753 a rivalry began growing between the British and the French for control over the Ohio Valley which eventually started the French and Indian War in1754. During the war, both the French and the British wanted the Indians on their side. George Washington built Fort Necessity in Great Meadows Pennsylvania. On July 3, 1754, George surrendered to the French in the battle for Fort Duquesne, signed a surrender agreement, and marched back to Williamsburg. This was the only time that George Washington ever surrendered, although he did lose many battles. After this defeat, Governor Dinwiddie lowered his rank from colonel to captain and George was insulted so he resigned. General Braddock, a 60 year old British officer, was sent from England with 2,000 British soldiers to capture Fort Duquesne with George as his advisor and aide. The French and Indian War finally ended in 1763.

By 1775 the Revolutionary War began. George was elected as general of the Continental Army by the Continental Congress. George Washington defeated General Abercromby in his attack on Fort Ticonderoga over the British Government on July 8, 1758. George lost Long Island and Manhattan to the British and blamed it on the fact that the patriots relied too much on the militia. The Revolutionary war was ended in 1783.
